cannot set up email account in Exchange 2003 with the name of "service"
Is there a way to have Exchange 2003 accept the name "service" as a valid email address? For example, service@domain_name.com? I have not been able to get Exchange to allow it. My email was hosted by an online provider, but we have moved it in-house but the name "service" would not be allowed. I have hundreds of clients and customers using the old service address, but now when mail is sent there, not even an error message is generated to indicate failure to the sender. Please help! Marv

When you send an email to service@domain_name.com, do your message tracking logs show where it went?

Marv There's nothing special about that name.Have you searched the AD for a proxy address that matches it? Mayboeit's assigned to a distribution group with no members. Or to a publicfolder. Or to a contact. If you send a message to the e-mail address and request a deliveryreceipt, do you you get the delivery receipt?---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hello Marvin, You cannot use certain logon names in AD, service happens to be one of them. Null SID Everyone Local Creator owner Creator group NT pseudo domain NT authority Dialup Network Batch Interactive Service Builtin System Anonymous Logon Creator owner server Creator group server Enterprise domain controllers Self Authenticated Users Restricted Terminal server user Proxy http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/266633?p=1 Miguel Miguel Fra / Falcon ITS Computer & Network Support , Miami, FL Visit our Knowledgebase Sharepoint Site

While the samaccountname "service" is disallowed, there is nothing special about the smtp address service@domain_name.com. Any mailbox-enabled user can be assigned that address (as long as it hasn't already been assigned) , and recieve email addressed to it.

Hi mjolinor, You are correct. I just added "service@mydomain.com" as an SMTP address to an existing mailbox and it worked, I was able to receive. MiguelMiguel Fra / Falcon ITS Computer & Network Support, Miami, FL Visit our Knowledgebase Sharepoint Site
